Exponential Approximations for Tail Probabilities in Queues II: Sojourn Time and Workload

چکیده
We continue to focus on simple exponential approximations for steady-state tail probabilities in queues based on asymptotics. For the G/GI/1 model with i.i.d. service times that are independent of an arbitrary stationary arrival process, we relate the asymptotics for the steadystate waiting time, sojourn time and workload. We show that the three asymptotic decay rates coincide and that the three asymptotic constants are simply related. We evaluate the exponential approximations based on the exact asymptotic parameters and their approximations by making comparisons with exact numerical results for BMAP/G/1 queues, which have batch Markovian arrival processes. Numerical examples show that the exponential approximations for the tail probabilities are remarkably accurate at the 90 th percentile and beyond. Thus, these exponential approximations appear very promising for applications.

Exponential Approximations for Tail Probabilities in Queues: Sojourn Time and Workload
In this paper, we focus on simple exponential approximations for steady-state tail probabilities in G/GI/1 queues based on large-time asymptotics. We relate the large-time asymptotics for the steady-state waiting time, sojourn time and workload. We evaluate the exponential approximations based on the exact asymptotic parameters and their approximations by making comparisons with exact numerical...
متن کاملExponential Models: Approximations for Probabilities
Welch & Peers (1963) used a root-information prior to obtain posterior probabilities for a scalar parameter exponential model and showed that these Bayes probabilities had the confidence property to second order asymptotically. An important undercurrent of this indicates that the constant information reparameterization provides location model structure, for which the confidence property ...
متن کاملAsymptotic behaviour of the tandem queueing system with identical service times at both queues
Consider a tandem queue consisting of two single server queues in series with a Poisson arrival process at the rst queue and arbitrarily distributed service times which for any customer are identical in both queues For this tandem queue we relate the tail behavior of the sojourn time distribution and the workload distribution at the second queue to that of the residual service time distribution...
متن کاملEstimating Tail Probabilities in Queues via Extremal Statistics
We study the estimation of tail probabilities in a queue via a semi-parametric estimator based on the maximum value of the workload, observed over the sampled time interval. Logarithmic consistency and efficiency issues for such estimators are considered, and their performance is contrasted with the (non-parametric) empirical tail estimator. Our results indicate that in order to “successfully” ...
متن کاملCommuting matrices in the queue length and sojourn time analysis of MAP/MAP/1 queues
Queues with Markovian arrival and service processes, i.e., MAP/MAP/1 queues, have been useful in the analysis of computer and communication systems and di erent representations for their stationary sojourn time and queue length distribution have been derived. More speci cally, the class of MAP/MAP/1 queues lies at the intersection of the class of QBD queues and the class of semi-Markovian queue...
